Dear supporters,
We need the UK government to step up in this emergency. Conditions on the Greek islands are deteriorating, and over 1,800 lone children are stuck in overcrowded, chaotic camps. There were recently several fires on Lesvos island, in which a school for children burnt down. Many NGOs and workers are leaving the island because of safety concerns, and reports of a confirmed case of Covid-19 on Lesvos have sparked fears of a mass outbreak.
These camps are not places for children. Please sign this petition started by Safe Passage asking the UK government to urgently resettle child refugees from the Greek islands.
While we are continuing with our campaign to ensure the government keeps reunifying child refugees with their families in the long term, we want to make sure we are supporting any emergency measures to resettle vulnerable children and young people. This is especially considering the recent action from Turkey to ‘open’ its borders and the ensuing clashes on both sides, as well as the developments of coronavirus across Europe.
The Greek government has written to the UK asking for help, but as far as we know, the UK has not responded. Let’s put some pressure on the UK government to step up and support these vulnerable children now.
Thank you all for your continued support – we couldn’t do any of this without you.
We hope you are all keeping safe.
Best wishes, Melissa and Hannah x
