Dear Petition Signer,

Protecting what we're thankful for, our friends and families, our health, the food we all eat, can be a lot of work year round. As a signer of the first Fukushima Fallout Food Safety petition, you clearly care about the issue and you know it's been a long process. Regulatory protections for our food are constantly under attack. Here's an update on the crazy Fukushima food front ~

Suddenly Fukushima seafood is all the rage! The U.S. Ambassador to Japan announced that the U.S. military will buy bulk Japanese seafood banned by other countries for U.S. military bases. The Japanese Embassy hosted a White House sushi event featuring seafood caught off the coast of Fukushima. Japan's top chefs are raving about Fukushima sashimi and sushi. As part of Japan's recovery efforts, officials there have pledged to redirect food banned by other countries to those that have not, including the U.S.

Promoting food from a radioactive recovery zone is a page taken from the International Commission on Radiological Protections 111 updated April 2011: “There may be situations where a sustainable agricultural economy is not possible without placing contaminated food on the market...this will necessitate an effective communication strategy to overcome the negative reactions from consumers outside the contaminated areas.”  So is it any wonder that Prime Minister Fumio Kishida recently declared Fukushima seafood to be "safe and delicious!".

We know otherwise. How can it be safe when FDA lifted all food restrictions in 2021? Now that Japan has just completed a THIRD-ROUND of radioactive wastewater discharge into our shared Pacific Ocean, they must stop stalling and act immediately and responsibly to increase food testing and establish safer regulations. If you have not yet commented on FFAN's FDA Citizen Petition now is the time.  Feel free to add an additional updated comment. It doesn't need to be expertly detailed, but the FDA does need to know that we care about what we eat and they need to do their job.

While you're at it, you can quickly send a note to your Representative to alert them to FDA's slow response. This sample language might come in handy. Find your Representative here

COMMENT to the FDA: Japan has been dumping Fukushima radioactive waste into our shared ocean and FDA must act now to lower the acceptable levels of man-made radiation allowable in our food supply.
