APPROVED - SUBMISSION TO PARLIAMENT: OF PETITION ON URGENT CALL FOR A MENSTRUAL HEALTH AND HYGIENE MANAGEMENT BILL – AND LAW

This is a public announcement that the Honourable Speaker and the House of Parliament of the Republic of South Africa has approved the Team Free Sanitary Pads petition submission. The Urgent call for a Menstrual Health and Hygiene Management Bill - and Law petition was an online one started on Change.org, by the Team Free Sanitary Pads campaign which is a collective movement championing gender equality and for the eradication of period poverty in South Africa. We recently raised an urgent request for the motion of debate for a Menstrual Health Rights Bill and Law in South Africa. This is pertaining to our Memorandum of Demands supported by over 31 organizations and the Change Dot Org petition with over 40 000 signatures which we delivered to the South African Government in our peaceful demonstration held at the Union Buildings in Pretoria and Cape Town Parliament dually - on 26 August 2022.

The petition submission was adopted and sent to the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Health today, 29/08/2023. 

We therefore look forward to the South African Government recognizing a Menstrual Health Rights Bill and Law – as all relevant Parliamentary processes unfold as mandated by the South African Constitution and Parliamentary Rules.
