As a Venezuelan immigrant currently residing in Canada, I have witnessed first-hand the severe degradation of democracy in my home country under the Maduro regime. The fraudulent manipulation of election results has perpetuated Nicolás Maduro's hold on power, despite widespread resistance from the Venezuelan people. This petition calls on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the Canadian government to formally condemn the actions of the Maduro administration, reject the fraudulent results of the recent elections, and support the rightful victory of Edmundo Gonzales.

Venezuela, once one of the wealthiest countries in Latin America, is now in a state of devastating economic and political crisis due to the systematic corruption of Maduro's government. By 2020, more than 7 million Venezuelans had fled the country to escape worsening conditions. The continuation of Maduro’s illegitimate presidency not only prolongs this crisis but also deeply impacts Venezuelans abroad, including those living in Canada.

For Venezuelan immigrants in Canada, the ongoing undemocratic practices in Venezuela represent a continuous source of distress and uncertainty about the future of their homeland. Many of us remain deeply connected to our families and communities in Venezuela and are deeply affected by the injustice faced by our fellow citizens. The legitimacy of the government in Venezuela is not just a distant concern but a pressing issue that impacts our sense of justice and our ability to support meaningful change.

Furthermore, if democratic principles are not upheld and Maduro remains in power, it is likely that even more Venezuelans will be forced to leave their homeland in search of safety and stability. This potential surge in migration would place additional strain on countries like Canada, which may face increased demands for humanitarian support and resettlement services.

The Canadian Government's public denouncement of Maduro's regime and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's support would send a powerful message of solidarity with both Venezuelans in Venezuela and those who have sought refuge in Canada. By recognizing Edmundo Gonzales as the legitimate leader of Venezuela, Canada can help catalyze international efforts to restore democracy and human dignity in Venezuela and address the broader implications for the Venezuelan diaspora.
