Joint efforts of many Russian people, including marine scientists and environmental activists, attracted the attention of Russian authorities to the problem of marine mammals captures for trade. There are some positive changes: catches for 2019 were not approved, and export permits to China for some whales captured in 2018 were refused. Authorities also found violations in the process of the approval of 2018 catches, as well as in the capturing process. Captor's organizations are currently under investigation. Orcas and beluga whales which are kept in Primorsky krai are under arrest and are not allowed to be moved anywhere. Still there is a struggle in mass media. We hope that official investigation and publicity will help to stop marine mammal captures for aquariums in our country.
