Russia has released Orca take quotas for 2017.
Permission has been given to take 10 Orcas out of the Sea of Okhotsk! There are no stipulations of eco-types.
From the early 1960's to 1976 an estimated 58 Southern and Northern resident killer whales were either captured and sent to aquariums or died during the capture process. Both populations have struggled to recover from these captures. The Southern residents are listed as endangered and the Northern residents are listed as threatened.
In 1976 the capture industry turned their sights to the Icelandic and North Atlantic populations. From 1976 to 1989, 54 Orcas were captured and sold to aquatic parks. These captures included Tilikum, Katina, Kasatka and Ulises (Captive at SeaWorld Orlando and San Diego) with Kiska and Stella being held in Canada and Japan. Keiko the star of Free Willy was also an Icelandic Orca.
We can see that in just these two parts of the world where Orcas have fallen victim to the captive industry that if Russia continues to capture Orcas from the Sea of Okhotsk the population will have just as much trouble overcoming as the others have.
Captive cetacean research is obsolete. Please ask the Russian Federation not to continue to make the same mistakes other countries have made decades earlier by decimating their population of Orca for profit.
Please sign and share our petition to ask the Russian Federation to ban all wild captures of cetaceans for research, sale and public display immediately.
Thank you so much!
Sincerely
