With the passing of Tilikum, the Orca who was held at Sea World Orlando, we're reminded of Nord. Nord is a male, resident, Russian Orca, captured in the Sea of Okhotsk in October 2013. Nord was approximately 4 years old when he was taken from the ocean. After capture he and Narnia were hidden in a temporary holding facility made of two small interconnected pools near Moscow. They were kept there secretly until they were transferred to The Moskvarium along with Malishka (Juliet) while the facility was still under construction. The sounds of construction crews & machinery were what these sentient beings heard day after day. Nothing like the open ocean where they could develop their communication skills, hunt, create close family bonds, use their echolocation and learn from the matriarchs. We know from documented scientific evidence, Orca can live to be over 100 years old in the wild. Example, J-2, known as Granny who was a Southern Resident Orca just recently passed away and was over 100 years old. She was still the matriarch of her pod until the day she died.
Nord is now 7 years old and his dorsal fin is already beginning to bend to one side. In the wild only 1% of Orca have bent dorsal fins. Scientists have found because captive Orca spend so much time on the surface of the water that the gravity and weight of the fin causes it to bend. In the wild Orca dive deep and don't spend all their time on the surface. Nord lives with two females and is physically abused by Juliet daily. It is such a small facility that like Tilikum, he has nowhere to go to escape and is being forcefully rammed, pushed against concrete walls and being tail kicked by the dominate females. Nord, being a male is on the list as a main breeding stud for captive female Orca around the world.
Nord's life is already mirroring the life of Tilikum. Important to recognize because we already know the outcome of Tilikum's life. We now know that it is just a matter of time before Nord is driven to possibly kill humans by the confinements and psychological torture of captivity. After Tilikum killed the 3rd person, his trainer Dawn Brancheau a lot of his time was spent in a small med pool only coming out to splash people at the end of the shows and that is also where he took his last breath on January 6, 2017.
We are literally watching Tilikum's life being replayed by Nord. Currently, Nord has been in captivity for just under 4 years. He is still young enough to be released back into his wild ocean home. Research of captive cetaceans has proven time and time again that Orca and all cetaceans do not fare well in captivity. Captive research is obsolete. It's time to only research wild Orca within their wild habitat.
Please sign & share our petition to ask the Russian Federation to ban all wild captures of cetaceans for research, sale, and public display. We are asking them to follow their own law that states, any marine mammal captured must only be for research and must be returned back to the place of capture once research is completed. Thank you! Together we can make change happen!
