Urgent Appeal for Justice Against Arbitrary and Wrongful Disconnection by Kaduna Electric

The Issue

I Dennis Ekwere, unmetered customer to Kaduna Electric, Makera, Kakuri office, Kaduna State, Nigeria is writing to bring attention to the gross injustice and abuse of power I have experienced at the hands of Kaduna Electric.

Background:

Upon moving into my Kaduna residence, which was previously disconnected, I was assured by Kaduna Electric that there were no outstanding bills. I paid the reconnection fee and moved in.
Two months later, I received a demand notice for N510,429.24, a bill I had no part in generating. I contested this inherited debt, citing its illegality, and was met with hostility.
My consistent monthly bills ranged between N3,000 and N5,800 from August 2023 to October 2024, all of which I paid promptly.

The Issue:

In November 2024, my bill inexplicably skyrocketed to N12,752.40. Suspecting overbilling, I formally contested the charge via a letter dated December 16, 2024.
On December 24, 2024, without any prior notice or resolution of my complaint, Kaduna Electric disconnected my electricity supply.
This disconnection was a deliberate act of intimidation and abuse, intended to disrupt my Christmas. It resulted in the spoilage of my refrigerated food items.

My Grievances:

I assert my right to contest bills that do not reflect my actual electricity usage.
The November 2024 bill was clearly excessive, and contesting it should not have resulted in punitive disconnection.
The disconnection was arbitrary, wrongful, and a direct violation of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) Customer Protection Regulation 2023.
My complaints to NERC have been met with indifference.
I have also filed petitions with the Public Complaint Commission and the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Council of Nigeria.
I have been without electricity since December 24th 2024.

Call to Action:

I implore you to join me in demanding justice. This blatant abuse of power must be stopped. Your support is crucial in holding Kaduna Electric accountable and preventing future injustices.

Please sign and share this petition widely.

We must stand together to protect our rights as consumers.
