The Issue

Every time there is an accident anywhere on the A55, thousands of people have their day disrupted. Commuters are delayed getting to work, parents are late collecting their children, appointments are missed, businesses lose valuable time, and emergency services face additional pressures. While concerns are often raised about the section between Northop and Caerwys, the reality is that accidents, congestion and delays often occur across the entire length of the A55, affecting communities throughout North Wales.
The moment that convinced me something had to change wasn’t a single major incident, but the realisation that the same problems keep happening week after week, with little sign of improvement. Whether it’s road closures following collisions, heavy congestion during peak periods, or lengthy delays at the start of holiday weekends, the impact on residents, visitors and businesses is significant.
The A55 is a vital artery of North Wales, connecting communities, supporting tourism and facilitating trade across the region. Yet many road users feel that increasing traffic volumes, recurring incidents and regular congestion are putting growing pressure on a route that is essential to daily life and the economy of North Wales.
It is time for these issues to be examined seriously and effectively.
Improving safety and reducing congestion could be supported through several measures, including:
1. Enhanced Infrastructure and Traffic Management
Review traffic flow, junction layouts, slip roads and known congestion hotspots across the A55 to identify opportunities for improvement.
2. Increased Signage and Real-Time Information
Provide clearer warning systems and more effective digital signage to help drivers respond safely to changing traffic conditions and incidents ahead.
3. Comprehensive Safety Review
Undertake regular road safety audits and examine collision data, congestion patterns and driver behaviour across the entire A55 corridor to identify recurring causes of disruption.
4. Improved Driver Education and Enforcement
Consider initiatives that promote safer driving, better lane discipline, improved use of slip roads and greater awareness of the causes of congestion and collisions.
5. A Wider Transport Strategy for North Wales
Explore how improvements to rail, public transport and freight infrastructure could help reduce pressure on the A55 while supporting economic growth throughout the region.
By examining all potential causes and solutions, we can work towards reducing accidents, easing congestion and improving the reliability of one of North Wales’ most important transport routes.
We urge the Welsh Government, local MPs, Senedd Members and other relevant authorities to undertake a comprehensive review of the A55 and develop a long-term plan to improve safety, reliability and resilience for everyone who depends on it.
North Wales deserves a transport network that is safe, reliable and fit for the future.
Please sign this petition and help us show the strength of public feeling. Together, we can push for meaningful action and a safer, more reliable A55 for residents, businesses and visitors alike.
