When asked by YouTube what 'category' we wish our videos to appear under, none of the options seem to truly fit the niche we belong to. ASMR channels and videos have crafted a distinct corner for themselves on the platform without any formal recognition. It is time that YouTube acknowledges this and creates an ASMR category.

ASMR (Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response) channels and videos have witnessed a massive surge in popularity in recent years. With billions of viewers tuning into ASMR videos on YouTube itself, the demand and enjoyment of these videos are hard to ignore (Smith, 2019).

ASMR is more than just a fleeting trend, it is a global community of people who find relaxation, a sense of secondary socialization, and even use it as a sleep aid. This phenomenon is not just a viewer-favourite but also a creator-favourite too. There are thousands of content creators who exclusively specialize in ASMR content, each with their unique adaptations and approaches, contributing to the diversity of the platform. Yet, when these dedicated creators go to categorize their channels, they find no category that accurately represents them.

By providing an ASMR category, YouTube would acknowledge the presence and contributions of this burgeoning community. It is not just about providing a category for simplicity but also about aligning recognition with representation. This change will promote ease of content classification and facilitate better user navigation, thereby creating a more inclusive platform and user-friendly experience.
