Urge USN to Expand Childcare Options in Oak Harbor, WA

Urge USN to Expand Childcare Options in Oak Harbor, WA
The Issue
The current state of childcare availability on Whidbey Island is dire, with families facing wait times of up to two YEARS to secure a spot for their children. This situation is particularly devastating for military families who are frequently relocating and rely on dual incomes to manage the high cost of living in Oak Harbor, WA. Did I mention that this is an island?
For these families, waiting for daycare means surviving on a single income, which is nearly impossible given the local cost of living. Whidbey Island’s cost of living is 17% higher than the national average, with housing costs alone significantly above average. For instance, monthly rents range from $1,500 for smaller units to $2,800 for larger homes (Redfin) (AreaVibes). Additionally, essential goods and services, such as groceries and healthcare, are also more expensive here (AreaVibes).
The financial burden extends further with the average cost of childcare in Washington State reaching up to $1,200 per month per child (Economic Policy Institute). This expense is unmanageable for single-income households and those awaiting dual incomes due to a lack of available childcare.
This untenable situation is not only a financial strain but also a significant factor in decreasing morale and retention rates within our military community. The current childcare crisis directly impacts the Navy’s ability to retain skilled personnel, as families struggle to balance their financial and familial responsibilities.
We urgently call upon the United States Navy (USN) and local authorities to take immediate action by opening additional childcare facilities and providing more funding for private childcare options. Doing so will support our military families, ensuring they have the resources needed to thrive both professionally and personally.
By addressing this critical issue, you will help maintain a strong, stable, and motivated military presence on Whidbey Island. We must act now to ensure that every family has access to affordable, timely childcare services. This can result in increased career opportunities!
Please sign this petition if you believe in supporting our military families and improving their quality of life on Whidbey Island. Together, we can make a difference.
