The Issue

Every football fan knows the excitement of a new season, and for many, it's not just about the games; it's about wearing that new kit with pride. Yet, for those of us who have held a passion for the sport for years, there's been a change that's dampened the sense of tradition and identity that comes with our beloved team shirts: the introduction of blank boxes on the back of jerseys.

It may seem trivial to those outside the community, but to supporters like me, these boxes are more than just a design choice. They're a deviation from the rich tapestry that team patterns once painted on our shirts. These patterns carried stories, invoked memories, and were an integral part of our club identities. They were there when our teams lifted trophies, when we faced defeats, and when we made history. The unique designs deserve to be showcased, uninterrupted by blank spaces.

The decision to mandate these plain backs is largely due to visibility standards for player names and numbers. While I understand the necessity for clarity in broadcasting and referee calls, surely there are better, more creative ways to ensure legibility without sacrificing the artistry of the shirt’s design. Clubs can incorporate innovative font styling or contrasting colors specifically designed to enhance visibility without detracting from the overall aesthetic.

UEFA has the power to set these standards, and with it, a responsibility to respect the history and culture of the sport. Other leagues manage to balance visibility with design integrity, and European league teams should lead by example.

We’re calling upon UEFA to engage with clubs, designers, and fans to find a compromise that achieves the necessary functional goals while respecting the fans' connection to their teams. Fans are a crucial part of football’s ecosystem, and their voices should steer the design choices that affect the very identity of the teams they pledge allegiance to.

Join me in urging UEFA to bring back the creativity, tradition, and detail to our shirts. Let’s bring a piece of football culture back to life and keep our heritage visible for new generations of fans to enjoy. Sign this petition to make your voice heard for the beautiful game.
