Urge Truro, Nova Scotia to Implement Non-Lethal Deer Coexistence Program

The Issue

This petition hits close to my heart because there exist humane alternatives that can replace lethal culls, alternatives like vasectomies, spay vaccines, and even deer spas (lint rollers on a feeder that remove insects from the deer). These methods ensure the control of deer population without resorting to brutal culls. Furthermore, implementing measures such as lowering speed limits can help in reducing human-deer accidents. Our town, Truro Nova Scotia, currently uses culling as a method to control deer population, but we believe in the possibility of a more peaceful and healthier coexistence with these majestic creatures.

Deer are a crucial part of the ecosystem, contributing to seed dispersal and supporting other wildlife populations. Culling not only disrupts these ecological balances but also imposes a cruel death on these animals. Globally, many cities and municipalities have begun embracing non-lethal alternatives, with significant success. For instance, Hastings-on-Hudson, NY, launched a non-lethal deer management program in 2014, carrying out sterilization efforts that led to a decrease in the deer population of about 40% in five years (source: Hastings-on-Hudson’s Deer Management Program).

Truro can also become such a successful example, setting a precedent for other cities by choosing to coexist instead of cull. We urge the competent authorities to stop killing deer and replace the cull with a non-lethal coexistence program, prioritizing life and ecological balance. Please, sign this petition and help us protect our dear deer.
