Animal welfare is a cause close to my heart, and the treatment of animals, particularly those raised for food, is something I believe we all should care about. It troubles me to learn about the current standards at Perdue, a company that supplies products to Trader Joe’s but falls short in ensuring humane practices for the animals in their care.

Perdue has been criticized for maintaining conditions that are detrimental to the well-being of the animals they raise. Reports and investigations have consistently highlighted issues like overcrowded living spaces, lack of proper veterinary care, and inhumane handling practices. In an era where transparency and ethical responsibility are paramount, it's concerning that such practices persist. Trader Joe’s, a brand respected for its unique products and dedication to customer satisfaction, should align its values with companies that uphold strong welfare standards.

Stronger animal welfare standards are not only a moral imperative but also benefit the health of our communities and the environment. According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), over 60 billion animals are raised for food globally each year, with only a fraction receiving humane treatment. Companies like Perdue must take actionable steps to improve their practices significantly.

Trader Joe's has the power to make a significant impact by reassessing their supplier relationships. By choosing to partner only with companies that are transparent and committed to animal welfare, they can lead by example. Such a shift would encourage Perdue, and other companies in the industry, to adopt better practices and demonstrate that cruelty has no place in our food supply chain.
