This misunderstanding fueled my intolerance and judgmental attitudes towards others—a sentiment that, if left unchallenged and widespread, can lead to catastrophic consequences, much like the tragic events orchestrated by Jim Jones and David Koresh. A clearer understanding of these theological concepts is therefore not just an academic pursuit; it is essential for fostering a more inclusive and understanding religious community.
As described in Jeremiah 31:31-34, the New Covenant is a Jewish metaphor for conscience and, as such, a symbol of God’s unchanging love for and promise to ALL humanity.
The New Testament, on the other hand, is the collection of writings that convey the teachings and life of Jesus Christ. It tells us about the New Covenant but it is not the New Covenant.
Confusing the unwritten New Covenant with the written New Testament leads to literalism. It leads to misguided interpretations, deepening divisions and promoting extremist ideologies.
The Vatican stands as a beacon of spiritual leadership for millions of believers around the world. It holds great influence over interpretations of scripture and can set a precedent for theological enlightenment.
