Urge the US to Join the ICC

Urge the US to Join the ICC
The Issue
The necessity for the United States to join the International Criminal Court (ICC) is personal to me because it represents a vital step towards ensuring that individuals who have committed heinous crimes are held accountable, regardless of their stature or political influence. This move would compel law enforcement within US jurisdiction to arrest individuals such as Benjamin Netanyahu, Yoav Gallant, Vladimir Putin, and others who may be on US soil and subject to ICC warrants.
The ICC, located in The Hague, Netherlands, is a pivotal institution in the fight against impunity for crimes such as genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity. With 123 member states, the ICC plays a critical role in delivering justice on the international stage. Unfortunately, the US has remained outside this vital institution, limiting the scope of international justice and undermining global efforts to deter potential perpetrators from orchestrating crimes without accountability.
Joining the ICC would demonstrate the US commitment to universal human rights and the principles of justice. Membership would also empower the US to play a constructive role in shaping the policies and procedures of the ICC, ensuring that they reflect the values of fairness and due process that the US holds dear.
Critics of joining the ICC often cite concerns about sovereignty and political targeting. However, joining would be an affirmation of the US belief in a global rule of law where no individual is above accountability, not an erosion of sovereignty. The ICC’s mandate is to prosecute only when national jurisdictions are unable or unwilling to do so, reaffirming respect for national sovereignty.
Moreover, the US would gain significant strategic and diplomatic benefits by joining the ICC. It would enhance American credibility on human rights issues, reinforce alliances, and help prevent future conflicts by dissuading would-be criminals with the certainty of prosecution and accountability.
I urge you to consider the profound impact of the US joining the ICC: a world where justice knows no borders and impunity is confronted with unyielding resolve. Join us in calling for this critical alignment with international justice by signing this petition.
