The Issue

Iranian immigrants to the United States have made significant contributions to society, enriching various fields such as medicine, academia, engineering, and business. Many are here on temporary visas, and risk being sent back to Iran.  In these times of heightened tension, it is crucial that we acknowledge and protect these valued members of our community, who not only seek refuge from oppression but also offer immense potential and positivity to American society.

In recent months, the U.S. has imposed a travel ban on Iranian nationals, prevents Iranians from applying for permanent residency, and has been deporting Iranians back to the Islamic Republic. This action comes without consideration of the grave dangers faced by these individuals in their home country. Iran is witnessing widespread protests due to crippling economic conditions and these protests have been met with excessive force by the regime, leaving hundreds dead.  Deporting individuals back to such an environment poses an imminent threat to their safety and lives.

The Trump administration has offered pledges of support for the Iranian people.  Given the current political climate in Iran, it is imperative that the Trump administration provides Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to Iranian immigrants. The administration should also resume hearing asylum cases for Iranian nationals, who risk being unlawfully imprisoned, tortured, or killed by the Iranian government should they return.

Moreover, TPS will allow Iranian immigrants who are already contributing positively to the U.S. economy and society to continue doing so without the fear of deportation. It embodies the essence of the American spirit—welcoming those who seek freedom and opportunity.

The time to act is now. We urge the Trump administration to consider this urgent humanitarian need and extend TPS to Iranian immigrants and resume asylum hearings. Your voice and support can make a difference. Help us protect lives and strengthen our community by signing this petition. Together, we can push for a future where compassion and humanity prevail.
