Hello all,
Now that the Bill 216 has moved to the Committee Stage, we need individual people or organizations to make a statement (in-person or written) in support of the Bill.
You don't have to live in Manitoba to make a statement but we need you to sign up as soon as possible.
Step 1:
Call the Manitoba Legislative Clerk at 1-204-945-3636 to sign up to speak OR to provide a written statement.
Say, "I'm calling to sign up to make a statement in support of Bill 216, that has now gone to committee stage".
(Bill 216 is the amendment to the Manitoba Human Rights Code to include "physical size and weight" as a protected characteristic.)
Step 2:
Prepare your in-person speech or your written statement. If presenting in person, you will have 10 minutes to speak with 5 minutes for questions.
Talk about why this Bill is important to you, why it should be passed, personal experience with sizeism, experience working with those impacted by sizeism, etc.
More information about Committee Stage can be found here: https://www.gov.mb.ca/legislature/committees/presentation_how_to.html
Also, if you are out of town or are not able to phone, I see there is an email here for the Clerk: committees@leg.gov.mb.ca.
I'm excited for where the Bill is headed but there is still work to do to ensure it passes through the Committee Stage. Your voice matters!!!
In solidarity,
