Urge the Indian Government to Enable Dual Citizenship for Footballers

Urge the Indian Government to Enable Dual Citizenship for Footballers
The Issue
It is no surprise that European football is the pinnacle of quality & strength. Established european footballers get call-ups to the national squad of their respective countries. Even there are many Indian-origin european players who wish India would call them up to their national squad. However, while our neighbouring countries are taking baby steps in the right direction, calling European footballers to join their national team, we on the other hand are still lagging, having to deal with sub-par players while quality Indian-origin players are waiting for their time in Europe to end without any national representation.
Looking at our neighbour Bangladesh, who recently profited from dual citizenship by acquiring the services of Hamza Chowdhury, a Premier League winner with Leicester City and a top player in the English Football League Championship, it's clear that dual citizenship can provide valuable opportunities for a nation's football. Furthermore, other SAARC nations like our closest rivals Pakistan and Sri Lanka, have ushered in players having relatives in their respective nations. However, our government is not keeping pace with our neighbors.
The Indian football scene has a tremendous potential for growth and advancement. Yet, it's hindered by the government's refusal to embrace the benefits of dual citizenship for football players. We are missing out on the potential to tap into a vast talent pool which could bring international success and raise the profile of Indian football.
The prohibition on dual citizenship restricts the involvement of Indian-origin footballers based abroad, who might otherwise be willing to play for the country. The team would greatly benefit from their training, experience, and expertise, and they in turn could bring glory and recognition to the country they share roots with. It will also help our country vastly into securing future qualification to the FIFA World Cup editions.
Therefore, we ask the Government of India to reconsider its stance on dual citizenship, specifically for footballers, as it will open doors for many Indian-origin athletes around the globe.
Sign the petition and join the campaign to help give Indian football the push it needs to climb to new heights.
