The Issue

Troy, New York, is a city rich in architectural history and cultural significance. At the heart of this historical tapestry is the Troy Proctor's Theatre, an iconic symbol of our community's heritage, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Yet today, this vital landmark faces threats from ongoing construction activities that could irreversibly alter or damage its historical, environmental, and structural integrity.

The Troy Proctor’s Theatre is not just a building; it's a vessel of stories, memories, and a testament to our past. It serves as a standing reminder of Troy's rich theatrical history and a constant source of inspiration for residents and visitors alike. The proposed construction threatens to undermine these values, making it imperative for us to act now to preserve this irreplaceable icon.

Comprehensive structural, historic-preservation, and environmental (SEQRA) reviews are essential before any work can continue. These reviews ensure that we honor the theatre’s legacy while accommodating necessary urban development. They will help identify potential risks, prevent historical inaccuracies, and propose construction methods that safeguard the theatre's structural and aesthetic features.

We question a conflict of interest in the Local Development Corporation (LDC) being both owner and lead agency for reviewing its own environmental compliance.

We urge the City of Troy to adopt a more informed approach by pausing construction until these thorough assessments are completed by qualified experts. By doing so, we not only protect our beloved theatre but also set a precedent for responsible and respectful urban development in historic areas.

Your voice can make a difference. By signing this petition, you contribute to the preservation of Troy's architectural heritage and help ensure that future generations can also enjoy the beauty of the Troy Proctor’s Theatre. Stand with us to protect Troy’s legacy by pausing construction and prioritizing our cultural history. Please sign and share this petition widely with friends, family, and fellow citizens.
