Urge the City of Shelby to Reconsider Eviction of the Bolivar County Library & Reopen

The Issue

The Dr. Robert T. Hollingsworth Public Library, a cherished community space in our hometown of Shelby, Mississippi, is under threat. Opened to the public on Valentine's Day 1959, this library sits at the heart of our town within a historic landmark depot built in 1902 and recognized as such in 1988.

Over recent years, our city has grappled with challenges related to facility repairs. In an unfortunate turn of events in 2023, it was decided that this iconic library branch would be evicted from its home to make way for a police station.

This decision does not only affect us personally but also impacts every resident who has ever borrowed a book or attended an event here. It disconnects us from our past and deprives future generations of experiencing this historical treasure.

We understand that there are pressing needs for updated facilities within our city; however, we believe that there must be alternative solutions which do not involve displacing such an important cultural institution.

We urge you to reconsider this decision and explore other options for housing the police station while preserving the Dr. Robert T. Hollingsworth Public Library's rightful place at its current location - serving as a beacon of knowledge and community spirit for all residents.

Please stand with us by signing this petition today! Let's show how much we value our local history and cultural institutions like Dr. Robert T. Hollingsworth Public Library!
