The Issue

Aquarium of the Pacific is home to staff, volunteers, and guests that have used the elevators in the parking structure closest to the facility for years. Recent developments have led to almost all three elevators being out of order for the past few months.

Reviews reflect the frustration broken elevators cause for those who rely on wheelchairs and other mobility equipment (strollers, walkers, crutches).

Your organizing committee, as well as fellow employees and volunteers of the Aquarium of the Pacific, have voiced our concern for the guest experience with the structure elevators, but no progress has been made to repair the elevators. AOP Workers United, working with AFSCME District Council 36 has taken action to finally get them safely working again.

Sign this petition to urge the City of Long Beach to take immediate action to repair the elevators in the city-owned aquarium parking structure.

“The City of Long Beach is currently undergoing modernization to the elevator system at the Aquarium Parking Structure. The modernization includes all new Elevator Control Systems, Power Units, Pump Motors, Drive and Hoist Systems, Door Operating Systems, Landing Systems, Emergency Communications and Elevator Cab interiors along with miscellaneous work required to provide refreshed, reliable elevators The first phase is underway which kicked off on September 21, 2026, for Elevator 3 with an anticipated completion date of November 6, 2026. Once the first elevator is updated, work will proceed on Elevator 2 in the same fashion. At this time, we anticipate work to begin in December of 2026 but is contingent on the completion of the first phase and manufacturing. Work will then proceed with Elevator 1 in the same fashion. Elevator 1 is currently operational and will remain operational until the modernization of elevators 3 and 2 is completed. At this time, we anticipate work on Elevator 1 to begin in March of 2027. In total, the City of Long Beach is committing $775,701 to the improvements of the elevator system at the Aquarium Parking Structure. The City remains committed to supporting a safe and welcoming environment to those visiting the Aquarium and surrounding businesses through use of this parking facility.
