Urge SJUSD to Retain the SDC Classroom at Graystone Elementary School

The Issue

📣 Update (March 17, 2025): We have presented this petition to the SJUSD Board and met with the decision-maker in a separate discussion. The fate of the SDC classroom at Graystone is still uncertain, but we will continue to keep signers updated. Read the full update here.

Graystone Elementary School plays an invaluable role in serving our community, especially through its Special Day Class (SDC). This unique classroom not only offers an adaptive curriculum tailored to students with specific academic needs but also fosters an environment where all children grow, learn, and benefit from inclusivity.

Recently, concerns have arisen following a proposal to move the SDC classroom out of Graystone Elementary School—a decision that was unfortunately leaked to parents through the ParentSquare app before even the teachers were informed. This lack of transparency and disregard for respectful communication has caused confusion and frustration among families and educators. Such significant decisions impacting our children should never be communicated in this manner.

The SDC classroom provides an essential foundation for students who require specialized support. It ensures that they feel safe, capable, and empowered in an environment tailored to their growth. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, students in special education programs perform better academically and socially when they are in inclusive settings that align with their needs. Removing the SDC classroom from Graystone disregards this research-backed approach and risks disrupting the positive, nurturing environment these students depend on.

Moreover, the Graystone community is fortunate to be a place where children grow up learning from each other’s differences. The presence of the SDC classroom has enriched the lives of all students, fostering empathy, understanding, and mutual respect. Moving the SDC class to another school not only disrupts these valuable relationships but diminishes the inclusive spirit that defines Graystone.

We, the undersigned, urge San Jose Unified School District (SJUSD) officials to reconsider their plans and keep the SDC classroom within Graystone Elementary School. This is about prioritizing our children's education, emotional well-being, and futures. Let’s stand together to protect the integrity of our community and the inclusive environment that benefits every child.

Please show your support by signing this petition. Together, we can ensure that all children at Graystone continue to learn, grow, and thrive. Let's keep Graystone great.
