Urge Scouting America leaders to reassess D.E.I. focus and reconnect with the military
The Issue
My name is Sawyer Imel, and I am an Eagle Scout, having been deeply involved in Scouting America for 13 years, since I was old enough to join. This organization has been a pivotal aspect of my life; it has shaped who I am today. However, I have been observing with growing concern as the program seems to be drifting from its core values. Recently, Scouting America has prioritized Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (D.E.I.) initiatives. While I understand the importance of inclusivity, it feels as though the program is losing sight of its foundational connections and values, particularly its historic and vital relationship with the military. Many scouts, including myself, found discipline, honor, and leadership through programs that closely collaborated with military principles. To safeguard the future of Scouting America, I propose the leaders reevaluate their approach. Our focus should return to reinforcing our core values and strengthening ties with military traditions that have long been pillars of the scouting experience. This doesn't mean disregarding progress toward equality and inclusion but rather ensuring these efforts harmoniously coexist with the longstanding traditions that have served generations of scouts. Scouting America's collaboration with the military is crucial as it instills a sense of discipline, leadership, and civic responsibility in young scouts. It prepares them for their futures, instilling values that help them contribute positively to society. By reestablishing these connections, we safeguard a pivotal aspect of the scouting program that has been instrumental in developing strong leaders. It would also mean that earning your Eagle Scout won’t mean anything in the military. As it stands right now, if you enlist and have your Eagle, you are instantly promoted (I believe it is 2 ranks) above the base recruit. Join me in calling on the leadership of Scouting America to realign the focus of the program to encompass both inclusion and the cherished values derived from our military partnerships. It's imperative that we maintain the integrity and purpose of scouting for future generations. Please sign this petition to urge Scouting America's leaders to assess their current priorities and refocus on initiatives that renew and strengthen traditional values, ensuring a well-rounded program that supports every scout's growth and development.
