Urge Oshawa to Amend Bylaw for Boulevard Parking

The Issue

The city of Oshawa, along with the entire province of Ontario, is experiencing a significant population growth and housing crisis. This situation has led to an increase in rent (and house prices) and has forced more people to share accommodations or live at home longer. Consequently, the need for additional parking spaces has become more pressing than ever.

The current bylaw prohibiting boulevard parking is outdated and does not reflect our present needs. The ‘boulevard’ is typically the area of your driveway between the sidewalk and the road. Residents do not own this part of the driveway, it belongs to the city. However homeowners are responsible for maintaining it. Our neighbouring community of Clarington has already made provisions for boulevard parking - a solution that could also be beneficial in Oshawa.

With onset of this bylaw, vehicles must park on the street, which is only permitted in 3-hr increments, therefore this bylaw was passed without assessing the aftermath. The amendment of this bylaw would provide much-needed relief to residents struggling with limited parking options due to shared living arrangements or multi-car households. It's time we adapt our regulations to better serve the changing needs of our community.

Not being able to park on the boulevard also becomes an accessibility concern for any persons that require a wheelchair, stroller, walker, or cane. A full driveway leaves those with special needs to offload into the busy roadway, which can be a threat to their safety.

We urge the city council of Oshawa to reconsider this bylaw and allow for boulevard parking as a practical solution in response to our growing population and housing challenges. Please sign this petition if you agree that it's time for change!
