Urge Ohio to join Canada: for Ohio's freedom and future
The Issue
Ohio has long been a cornerstone of North America’s industrial and economic strength -- home to a resilient working class, world-class universities, and communities built on common sense values. But Ohioans have watched as the United States federal leadership grows increasingly out of touch with the needs, rights, and voices of its people. Even at the state level, federal political dynamics have influenced Ohio politicians to overstep and curb the liberties that the Ohio people demanded in their 2023 referendums. Now, Ohio's education is under attack, with threats to cut federal funding to our leading public universities. Healthcare remains a luxury that can bankrupt a family. The interests of billionaires dominate U.S. policy and now cabinet positions, while Ohio's working families are left behind. Despite producing over $927 billion in GDP, many of Ohio's workers struggle while their labor sustains a federal government that ignores their needs.
By contrast, Canada offers a national model that aligns more closely with the values many Ohioans already hold dear. Affordable education. Universal healthcare. Diplomacy grounded in peace, not profit. And a federal government that respects the fundamental liberties that the Ohio people voiced in their referendums. With nearly $20 billion goods exported from Ohio to Canada in 2024, and Ohio importing roughly $18 billion in Canadian goods, our economic ties are already deeply interwoven. In an era of destructive U.S. trade wars and global instability, a stronger, more stable relationship with Canada isn’t just pragmatic -- it’s visionary.
Our historical and cultural connections run deep. The Ottawa, Seneca, Shawnee, and Miami peoples lived and traded before Ohio joined the U.S. and the establishment of the Canadian-US border. Our shared indigenous history is not only a reminder of a common past, but a call to honor and protect a collective future. Before joining the US, much of Ohio stretching to the Ohio river was part of a province of Quebec.
Recent developments have shown that Ohio is no stranger to leading on progress: legalizing recreational marijuana, defending reproductive rights, and rejecting extremism. These aren’t outliers -- they reflect a populace increasingly aligned with Canadian social values and democratic norms, not the corporate controlled governance we see in Washington.
This petition calls on Ohio’s leaders to begin serious discussions around secession from the United States and integration with Canada. This is not a symbolic gesture. It is a concrete step toward safeguarding our economic future, reclaiming democratic integrity, and ensuring that the people of Ohio are governed with compassion, reason, and dignity.
Join us in calling for a bold realignment. Let Ohio be governed not by out-of-touch billionaires, but by values rooted in diversity, equity, reason, and shared prosperity. Let Ohio be governed by a national entity that reinvests in its people, not one that displaces its responsibility to its citizens by scapegoating others to prop-up a false national identity.
We call on Ohio’s legislature to form a nonpartisan commission to explore international models of governance and economic integration, including closer ties with Canada.
