Amazing news to kick off your weekend:

The NYC Department of Transportation will paint crosswalks across Columbia Street and install stop signs at the intersection with President Street this coming Tuesday, April 21!

This would not have been possible without the efforts and advocacy of so many people, including everyone who signed this petition and, most of all, the many longtime residents of the Columbia Street Waterfront community who have been advocating to DOT, elected officials, and our community board for well over a decade for these much-needed safety improvements at this dangerous intersection. A huge thanks is due to everyone who participated in outreach and planning for the recent meetings with DOT and everyone who attended these meetings, including the Columbia Street Waterfront Association, the Columbia Terraces member groups, and so many other concerned and caring community members.

The Columbia Street Waterfront community is planning to hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony and celebration of this important and long-overdue safety upgrade later this month. If you would like to be involved in the planning of this event or would like to receive updates on when it will take place, please fill out this form and we will be in touch soon.

DOT is still reviewing the need for placement of large planters in the road on the corners of Columbia Street approaching President Street as a hardened daylighting measure - which DOT's own research has found to be the only daylighting approach that reduces pedestrian injuries. They also will conduct a traffic study at the intersection of Columbia and Summit Streets, which has had many collisions over the past decade and also lacks pedestrian safety and vehicle speed control measures. We will share updates on these measures as soon as we have them.

Have a wonderful weekend, and thank you again for your support and efforts in making the Columbia Street Waterfront neighborhood safer!
