The issue

As a mum to two young children, aged 4 and 1, I have a deep-rooted desire for them to experience a world as vibrant and full of life as the one we have been privileged to inhabit. The lush landscapes, the diverse ecosystems, and the clean air that we sometimes take for granted are precious commodities. Unfortunately, these treasures are at risk if we fail to seriously address climate change and act upon the global commitments we have made.

In New Zealand, we pride ourselves on being a nation that values its natural beauty and environment. Yet, the path ahead requires more than appreciation—it demands action. Our responsibility as signatories to the Paris Agreement is clear: to limit global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius, preferably to 1.5 degrees. This goal is not merely a political obligation; it is a pledge to our children and future generations.

Despite the commitments made, New Zealand’s current policies and actions require acceleration to meet these targets. Reports suggest that we need substantial reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, increased investment in renewable energy, and more substantial efforts to protect our native species and habitats. According to the Climate Action Tracker, New Zealand’s actions are rated as "insufficient" to meet our commitments post-2020.

There is a cost to implementing changes, but there will be a greater cost to doing nothing at all. We ask politicians who pride themselves on having a ‘long term plan’ to put their policy where their mouths are.

I urge you to join me in calling on our government to honour their commitments under the Paris Agreement. This means implementing robust policies and strategies that will drastically cut emissions and preserve our natural surroundings for future generations. We need to ensure that political promises translate into real actions and policies that prioritize our planet.

By signing this petition, you stand with a community committed to fostering a sustainable environment for our children and grandchildren. We have the potential to be leaders in environmental sustainability, setting an example on the world stage. Let’s hold New Zealand accountable for a brighter, more sustainable future, and ensure a healthy planet for our kids to grow up in. Sign the petition and make a difference today!
