I work at Mindspace, a coworking space located in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, NY, every day. One of the recurring sights that disheartens me is the significant amount of food waste our kitchen generates daily. Seeing this affluent wastage makes me feel sick as I am fully aware of the environmental implications it brings along.

It is estimated that in the United States, we waste about 30-40 percent of our food supply according to the USDA. This wastage not only represents a misuse of the water, energy, and chemicals needed for growing and distributing food, but it also increases greenhouse gas emissions through the decomposition of organic landfill waste, potentially contributing to global warming.

In light of this, I am making a humble request to Mindspace to add a compost bin to our kitchen. Composting is an easy and effective way of recycling decomposable organic materials. It would significantly help us reduce our carbon footprint and serve as an example of environmental responsibility to the many businesses that work out of our space.
