Urge Meta Platforms Inc. to Implement Stronger Data Protection and Combat Fraud
The Issue
I personally experienced the disheartening impact of Meta Platforms Inc.'s lackadaisical data protection schemes when my Facebook account was hacked and linked to a spam Instagram account (consisted of a mix of numbers and letters), which was eventually disabled. There was no semblance of helpful customer support to turn to, as their account recovery processes are merely glitch-ridden websites. It was even more disconcerting to find out that Meta-verified platforms lead back to the same unhelpful websites providing no tangible assistance.
Upset and worried about my the possibility of loosing my account. I turned to Reddit and upgraded my Instagram to Meta’s paid service, Meta Verified (my previously linked now delinked Instagram).
While my experience was personal, it is not unique. According to the article “Facebook users lose access after violations of linked spam Instagram accounts they don’t own” this has been on going for quite sometime. Far too many users fall prey to breaches and fraudulent activities daily. This Petition implores Meta Platforms Inc. to increase accountability for data breaches, enforce stricter measures against fraudulent and spam accounts, ensure adequate notifications are in place, and improve their customer support protocols.
We need a digital environment that predicates accountability and security, given the crucial role that social media platforms play in our everyday lives today. It is unreasonable that a company of such magnitude does not take the necessary precautions to protect the digital lives and identities of its users. Statistics show that in 2021, almost 540 million data records from Facebook alone were exposed (Statista, 2021), a figure that underlines the need for urgent reform.
Let us urge Meta Platforms Inc. to take immediate, comprehensive action in addressing these critical issues. Please sign this petition to push for change and higher standards of data protection.
