Urge Media to Label Violence Against Women as Misogynistic Hate Crimes/Domestic Terrorism
The Issue
I'm a woman tired of seeing stories about women being killed by men with little to no acknowledgement by our mass media of the root hatred of women that motivates it. When Elliot Rodger went on a mass murdering spree due to his hatred of women - for not having sex with him - how was that not consistently labeled as a misogynistic hate crime by our media? He was radicalized and encouraged by the rhetoric of his fellow "incels" on the "manosphere" in an echo chamber of extreme misogyny. How is that also not an example of domestic terrorism? (Which is defined by the FBI, in part, as "activities: involving acts dangerous to human life that are a violation of the criminal laws of the United States or of any State; Appearing to be intended to: intimidate or coerce a civilian population...).
The same can be said for many similar attacks or attempted attacks on women by "incels" and other serial attackers. A recent example is the case of Rex Heuermann, who stands accused of the serial murder of female sex workers.
This behavior towards women is nothing new, and yet still - very little of the mainstream media coverage acknowledges these acts for what they truly are—misogynistic hate crimes and/or acts of domestic terror and violent extremism. These heinous acts are often downplayed or mischaracterized in news reports as isolated events. It's time for the media to call this violence what it is and help raise awareness about the systemic issues at hand which motivate and normalize it.
Let's stop pretending that these types of attacks on women are simply being perpetrated in isolation by mentally troubled men, and start consistently naming the larger societal issues and hate groups contributing directly to the severity of this problem. Sign this petition to demand that news organizations start labeling mass and serial murders, as well as serial rapes targeting women, accurately—as misogynistic hate crimes and domestic terrorism. Thank you.
