Our students need meaningful change. As a member of a Facebook group for parents with students enrolled in Prince George's County Public Schools, I read a heartbreaking post from a mother of a child with autism. She shared her child's story of attending a general education school, being lost in the woods, and being recovered with scratches on her legs but otherwise seemingly unharmed. As parents and community members, we are all grateful for this outcome. It could have been a different outcome.
What will it take for the special education system to change meaningfully? Suppose you agree that all children deserve a safe, free, appropriate public education as guaranteed under IDEA, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and the Americans with Disabilities Act. In that case, this is your opportunity to stand on the right side of history. Sign this petition and share it.
All children stand to benefit from this cause. We are urging the Maryland State Department of Education to intervene with the administration, including the superintendent's office. The leadership of Prince George's County Public Schools does not seem to have a plan or the capacity to create meaningful reforms in the special education system or transportation system. Students of all abilities are being deprived of their educational opportunities due to the perceived collapse of the transportation system. We need your help!
