I am an employee at Macy's and it deeply concerns me that we continue to distribute plastic bags in our stores. These bags are not only a significant environmental hazard, but they also come with unnecessary costs and inconveniences.

Plastic pollution is a global crisis, with over 8 million tons of plastic entering our oceans each year (Ocean Conservancy). This has devastating effects on marine life and ecosystems. Moreover, the production of these bags contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions, exacerbating climate change.

In addition, from a financial perspective, the use of plastic bags is costly for businesses like ours. Boscov’s Department Store has already taken steps towards sustainability by offering customers reusable canvas tote bags for less than $1.00 instead of distributing single-use plastic ones.

By following this model, Macy's could save considerable resources while also contributing positively towards environmental conservation efforts. It is time for us to take responsibility and make a change that benefits both our business and the planet we inhabit.
