Hello Everyone,
If you're a recent signer of my petition, I welcome you and thank you for your support. If you signed a while back and are reading this, I thank you for continuing to stay updated and sharing this petition. When it comes to immigration enforcement, the latest news is not what any decent human being wants to read. On Wednesday, June 10th, the head of the fascist regime occupying the White House, signed a bill giving an additional $38 billion for ICE, $26 billion for CBP and an additional $5 billion to cover unforeseen costs (AP News).
Here in Las Vegas, the news is disappointing, but not surprising. Earlier this month, Gov. Lombardo joined other Republican governors, and signed a letter to Republicans U.S. Sen. John Thune and Speaker of the House, U.S. Rep. Mike Johnson, in support of further funding (Yahoo News). In Henderson, concerned citizens and advocates remain vigilant of disturbing reports from our most local detention center, while city officials await answers (Las Vegas News). Henderson may not have a 287(g) agreement like Las Vegas, but the city's MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) still allows for questionable collaboration between federal agencies and local police.
We are nearly at two-thousand signers, so I once again ask you to share this petition with 5 people in your circle and on your social media platforms. A personalized, accompanying message is also helpful when sharing. Lastly, I invite each of you to take a next step in advocating for our community members. Choose one, choose all. Any will bolster support for our neighbors' safety and the protection of our rights.
CONTACT your Senators and Representatives (calls are more effective then emails). Find who they are here. You can call them on their local numbers or simply dial (202) 224-3121 for the Capital Switchboard, ask for your Senator/Congressperson by name and opt to leave a message or speak with a member of their team. You can keep it brief, but be specific. Share which actions you would like to see the most from them. For example, ask them to oppose any further funding for ICE/CBP, conduct an oversight visit to any of our 3 detention centers in NV, or pass state legislation to protect due process when someone is detained.
DONATE to local organizations that help immigrant community members like the ACLU of NV and UNLV's Immigration Clinic.
SUPPORT any of the many partner organizations in the Nevada Immigrant Coalition, however you are able. These organizations provide resources from trainings to legal support and mutual aid.
REPORT ICE/CBP sightings by calling or texting LV Defensa's Hotline at (702) 850-1161, but start with a free online training from the ACLU for best practices.
VOLUNTEER with NDLON's Adopt-A-Corner campaign to support and protect our communities' day laborers and their families.
As always, I appreciate your support. Wherever it may lead, I hope you find your home in this resistance, with a meaningful purpose and a welcoming community. Our power is greater together.
For the People,
Naomi
