Such actions being broadcasted without consequence can perpetuate a harmful narrative that such behavior is tolerable, normal, excusable, or even romantic.

According to the American Psychological Association, sexual coercion involves the use of manipulation, pressure, or persistent attempts to obtain sexual contact from someone who has not freely and enthusiastically consented. Sexual coercion is a severe violation of personal autonomy and dignity, and it must be addressed with the seriousness it deserves. Reality TV shows like Love Island USA hold significant cultural sway and can play a pivotal role in shaping societal norms and values. Ignoring this issue not only fails the victims but also misguides audiences who may interpret the absence of denunciation as approval.

As a victim of sexual assault, along with millions of other people, watching this televised with no repercussions is triggering. Allowing this to go unchecked is dangerous and allows others to think it is ok. 

We urge the producers of Love Island USA to take immediate action. A public service announcement (PSA) condemning sexual coercion should be aired, demonstrating the show's commitment to addressing such important matters and supporting victims. This PSA can help raise awareness, educate viewers about consent, and affirm that such conduct should be condemned unequivocally.

When popular media platforms fail to take a stand, it perpetuates a culture that minimizes sexual violence and re-traumatizes survivors.
