Urge Local Officials to Address Odors from Food Waste Used as Farm Fertilizer

The Issue

Many of our rural and suburban communities in Pennsylvania are dealing with an issue that affects our everyday life. The constant bad odor from food waste being used as farm fertilizer has become not just an annoyance but a hindrance to our quality of life. Our homes, yards, pools, parks, and other outdoor areas once used for summertime enjoyment are persistently bereft with the unpleasantness. Even outdoor community events, like those held at other farms not engaged in the use of this fertilizer, are being negatively impacted by this widespread, unmanaged issue.

This concern isn't merely about discomfort. There are health implications tied to the exposure to odors from food waste turned into fertilizer. In a study by Colorado State University, it was found that malodours can lead to physical stress and reduced mental health for nearby residents.

It's time that our local officials intervene to immediately mitigate the impact on our community and address the issue longer term. By signing this petition, we signal our commitment to creating a healthy and enjoyable environment for neighbors of farms that exists in harmony with the beloved agricultural community.
