We, the concerned citizens of Miami-Dade County, launch this petition from a place of collective urgency and deep respect for the cultural and historical significance of "The Well of Ancient Mysteries" located at 87 SW 11th Street, Miami, FL 33130.

This site holds profound importance as a sacred space frequently visited by indigenous groups for offerings and ceremonies. It is not just a well—it is a living testament to the rich heritage of the Tequesta people and a vital part of our community’s cultural fabric. The Tequesta tribe lived on Biscayne Bay in what is now Miami-Dade County and further north in Broward County and may have also included the northern half of Broward County and the southern half of Palm Beach County. Learn more here

Recently, the Leste Group, a well-known development company, acquired this property. While we recognize the need for urban growth, we strongly believe that development and cultural preservation can coexist. Therefore, we urge Leste Group to incorporate a dedicated garden or preservation space within their building plans to honor and protect this sacred site.

Preserving "The Well of Ancient Mysteries" would allow for the continuation of traditional practices, attract both locals and visitors, and ensure that Miami’s indigenous history is not erased. Additionally, this preservation effort could qualify for a tax conservation easement, providing financial incentives while demonstrating a commitment to cultural and environmental stewardship.

Beyond its historical value, this site symbolizes the wisdom of indigenous traditions, reminding us that respecting the past is key to building a more sustainable future. By taking action now, we can send a powerful message about the importance of cultural heritage and environmental responsibility.
