I’ve seen a lot of comments on FB regarding the petition and that people will not sign it as it does not call for the removal of the plaza. So I’ve decided to give an update regarding the petition.
I originally started the petition just as the first public meeting was arranged as I wanted to gauge people’s views regarding the new one-way system. Ultimately I wanted the council to review the whole of the scheme but highlighted one area of concern that I had actually experienced negatively. Hence focusing on the one way system. I knew if I went straight for asking for the removal of the plaza the council would give counter reasons, especially as it had only been installed and not evaluated by them. The issue I raised was immediate and actually as a result of the plaza’s implementation.
We have moved on swiftly since then and following presentation of the petition to KCC, it has been acknowledged and accepted by the Joint Transport Board for discussion. The petition has done its job, along with the views shared by 600 strong attendance at the last public meeting.
There is going to be a review of the whole active travel scheme and the petition will help to argue that the new one-way system is dangerous and could be easily rectified by the removal of the plaza. I have suggested that others can set their own petition up regarding the plaza specifically but no one has. I hope this clarifies the reasoning behind the petition.
