Urge Katy ISD School Board to Delay Facilities Naming Policy Changes

The Issue

The Katy ISD community is deeply concerned about the continued politicization of Katy ISD board policies by Board President Victor Perez for personal, political gain. The recent proposed changes to the Facilities Naming Policy is yet another worrying example.

According to a recent survey by the National School Boards Association, 89% respondents prefer school board decisions to be independent of political interference (NSBA, 2020). Katy ISD should not be an exception. Following the 2025 School Board Election, the board can consider and move forward with this policy revision, if they so choose.

If the proposed policy changes are not intended to target or retaliate against Board President Victor Perez's political opponent- recent Katy ISD elementary school namesake James Cross- then there is no reason the policy changes that would dramatically alter the requirements for namesake eligibility must be rushed through prior to the 2025 school board election.

To demonstrate that this policy change is not intended to allow the school board to retroactively withdraw any recent naming decisions, or to influence the current school board race, we demand the Katy ISD School Board table the proposed changes to the Facilities Naming Policy until after the 2025 School Board Election.

We insist the Katy ISD School Board of Trustees refrain from politicizing the CW Naming Policy for personal political gain. Please sign this petition.
