Urge JLHS Administrative Heads to Cease Using AI-generated Art

Urge JLHS Administrative Heads to Cease Using AI-generated Art
The Issue
We, the community of James Logan High School, urge principal Ron Polk to cease using AI-generated images for official emails, publications, and media.
Ever since the start of the 2025-26 school year at James Logan High School, principal Ron Polk has been using AI-generated images of Jimmy the Colt (the mascot of James Logan High School) and other representations for different school media and communications to students, including emails and presentations.
For JLHS administrative heads to use AI-generated art is contradictory of the school’s values, being “Intellect, Integrity, and Interconnectedness” especially Integrity. James Logan High School strictly prohibits the use of AI for school work citing plagiarism, since AI-generated work can strip away the merits of the learning process. While AI in school work and general art use are different in their own sense, for the leaders of a high school to use generative AI in itself seemingly validates its use and normality to students.
Also, James Logan High School has a thriving art community it can utilize, instead of using generative AI. Of course, our art community has continuously been empowered and strengthened by the school’s efforts, and I’m sure things have been better off with principal Ron Polk’s leadership. But, it's the use of AI-generated art that disregard what students artists can further contribute to the school in our digital media and considering generative AI’s negative relationship with human artists.
Beyond James Logan High School, generative AI usage garners environmental concerns surrounding AI data center water usage and ethical concerns regarding how AI processees human works to generate an image, among other concerns.
Companies and employers, especially in creative and art spaces, all over the world are turning to generative AI to create quick, inconsistent, and non-spirited work that continues to replace human effort. Hobbies, jobs, lifestyles, and even entire livelihoods rely upon art and it’s disheartening to see what AI is doing.
James Logan High School should not be one of these examples, and while generative AI use is increasing, our school should serve as an example of the sustainability and integrity it strives for. Students and community of James Logan High School, help me and uphold the integrity and community of our school.
Also, if you are a student artist, feel free to express your thoughts on the negative side of AI-generated art.
Note: Please do not spread any type of hate or hostility to Principal Ron Polk or any of the JLHS staff. These are decent, hard-working individuals so I do not condone any hateful behavior towards any of them. This petition only seeks to convince principal Ron Polk to no longer utilize AI-generated art for school media.
