Urge Jacksonville High School to Revoke Unjust Punishments for Cheerleaders
The Issue
In an unfortunate turn of events, cheerleaders from Jacksonville High School in Onslow County, North Carolina were unjustly punished for showing school spirit at an away game. These students attended the game not as cheerleaders but as regular students, and joined other fans in cheering "Go Cardinals". Their actions were no different from those of their fellow students yet they faced suspensions from school and team events. One student stated she now faces the heartbreaking reality of missing out on her prom.
The cheerleaders did not attend the game in their uniforms, and only went without their coach because she was unable to attend. They engaged in the same school spirit that is encouraged among all students at sporting events. It's disheartening that these young women are being penalized for supporting their team and participating positively within their community.
Students should not be punished for engaging in constructive activities and support for their community. This incident sends a discouraging message to our youth about participation and engagement within our schools.
We urge Jacksonville High School administration to reconsider this unfair punishment placed on these cheerleaders who were merely expressing school pride like any other student would do at a sports event. Let's stand up against this injustice by signing this petition urging the authorities to revoke these unwarranted punishments immediately!
