On May 20, 2024, two pro-Palestinian protesters were tragically killed and several others injured in Islamabad, Pakistan, when a car ran over a peaceful demonstration. Disturbingly, the Islamabad police were present but stood by idly as this horrific event unfolded. The protest was organized by SaveGazaCampaign and involved dedicated volunteers accomplishing a week-long, round-the-clock peaceful protest.

The SaveGazaCampaign is a "non-political, civilian-led initiative aimed at pressuring the government of Pakistan to act for the people of Gaza" [@savegazacampaign]. It chiefly demands that the Pakistani government take effective steps toward a ceasefire in Gaza. Their five demands can be found here.

As Pakistanis and concerned global citizens, we urge the Pakistani Ambassador to the US and our elected officials to call on the Pakistani government for an immediate, transparent, and thorough investigation into this incident. We are have already witnessed more than enough death and destruction in Gaza. And now to see that the people practicing their right to peacefully protest are not safe in a country like Pakistan is beyond disheartening.

Justice must be served for those who lost their lives and those who were affected while exercising their right to peaceful assembly.

UPDATE as of May 21, 2024, from an admin of the Save Gaza Campaign on the ground: The driver of the vehicle has been identified as an army officer in the published FIR. Please keep the pressure on - no matter how "high-ranking" - the accused must be investigated and brought to justice.

UPDATE as of May 28, 2024, from the author of this petition: An email has been sent to the the Ambassador Khan, urging him to do everything in his power to call on the Pakistani government for an immediate, transparent, and thorough investigation into this incident. It also asks him to work with the government to ensure the safety of SaveGazaCampaign participants, and effectively and meaningfully fulfill their demands as listed here.
