Instagram punishes creators of all kinds from growing. They are disproportionately targeting certain forms of expression, bodies, and communities while stifling creativity, art, education and freedom of expression.

In translation — if you’re a creator on Instagram, you’ve likely been targeted by their rigid nudity censorship. 

It's become far out of hand — both Ai their “human” review team. 

Let’s change it! We need all hands on deck to make it happen!

Currently 

Instagram’s current Community Guidelines around nudity enforcement are inconsistent, overly restrictive, and biased. 

While the platform permits certain forms of nudity, such as breastfeeding or medical-related images, it often flags or removes content in arbitrary ways. 

Artists, educators, activists, and marginalized communities — particularly women, non-binary individuals, and the LGBTQ+ community — frequently face unjust censorship of content.

In other words, any HINT of nudity and you’re thrown in Instagram jail — no matter how artful, it’s flagged as p*rn and you are punished. 

Nudity is not inherently sexual and it’s time we teach Instagram that lesson. 

Our Requests

We are calling on Instagram to:

1. Change its “cannot be shown to non-followers” status to “cannot be shown to minors under 18.” 

2. Increase transparency how content is flagged and removed, providing detailed reasons for takedowns and offer a clearer appeals process.

3. Reduce algorithmic bias by reexamining how automated systems disproportionately target certain communities and body types.

Why This Matters

Censorship on Instagram doesn’t just silence individuals — it undermines the principles of diversity, equity, and creativity that make the platform a vibrant community. It is crucial that Instagram evolves to respect and support a broader spectrum of human expression.

We believe in a platform where all users are treated equitably, where art and education can flourish, and where freedom of expression is upheld.

We respectfully ask Instagram to take immediate action to address this issue.

1. Improves Content Visibility Without Compromising Safety

Currently, when content is restricted to non-followers, it limits creators’ ability to reach wider audiences, even when their content is safe for adults. 

By adjusting this to restrict only minors under 18, Instagram can strike a balance between protecting young users and allowing adult audiences to engage with diverse, meaningful content. This approach would enable creators to grow their platforms while ensuring that sensitive content is responsibly filtered.

2. Reduces Censorship Bias

The “non-followers” restriction is overly broad and often results in the unnecessary suppression of content from marginalized communities, including LGBTQ+ creators and body-positive advocates. By targeting the restriction to minors only, Instagram can reduce the blanket censorship that disproportionately impacts these groups and ensure a fairer platform for all.

3. Encourages Responsible Use of the Platform

Restricting content to adults instead of non-followers encourages users to manage their own consumption responsibly. Adults who follow certain creators or explore public content do so by choice, making it less likely that they’ll encounter material they don’t want to see. Meanwhile, minors will still be protected from potentially unsuitable content.

By refining its approach to content restrictions, Instagram can get back to a platform that respects creative freedom and fosters a more equitable space for expression.
