Urge Huawei to Make Their Phone Bootloaders Unlockable Again

Urge Huawei to Make Their Phone Bootloaders Unlockable Again
The Issue
I'm a Huawei phone user seeking the renewed ability to install custom ROMs like GSIs on my device. I appreciate the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) and Huawei's hardware, but the inability of Huawei to make their phones' bootloaders unlockable is an obstruction to my tech enthusiasm. This is not an isolated case. Thousands of techies and regular users alike highly believe in the right to modify devices we own.
In 2018, Huawei halted the provision of bootloader unlock codes citing security reasons, which prevented users from modifying their device's operating systems (source: Android Authority). This decision has left many users unable to personalize their phones or extend their device's lifespans.
Advocates for electronics 'Right to Repair' strongly believe that consumers should have options that extend the lifecycle of their devices, an act which inherently contributes to reducing electronic waste. The Environment Protection Agency (EPA) stated in 2017 that around 44.7 million tons of e-waste was discarded globally, with only 20% being recycled. Unlockable bootloaders give users like me the chance to maintain, fix, and upgrade, reducing the need to discard and replace.
Action from Huawei in favor of unlockable bootloaders would breathe new life into many devices, contribute to e-waste reduction, and reaffirm the trust of its users. This request is not just about accessing AOSP on Huawei devices, but also about driving tech industry standards towards sustainable and user-rights respecting practices.
Join me in asking Huawei to make their phone bootloaders unlockable again. Sign this petition to show your support. Let's help influence a tech giant in our favor and set a precedent for other companies. Your signature could aid in a change that extends beyond our phones.
