Urge Hobby Lobby to implement LGBTQ+ nondiscrimination policies
The Issue
As someone who loves crafting, I often find myself in need of supplies to fuel my passion for making Kandi – beaded bracelets that bring joy and creativity into my life and those around me. However, each time I shop at Hobby Lobby, I'm constantly reminded of the policies that lead to the unfair treatment of their employees, specifically those who are part of the LGBTQ+ community. Being both Bi and Non-binary, this issue resonates deeply with me.
Hobby Lobby, a well-known retail chain across the United States, has not yet implemented inclusive and nondiscriminatory policies that ensure the fair treatment of all employees, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. This is concerning because every worker deserves to feel safe, respected, and valued in their workplace. According to recent surveys conducted by organizations such as the Human Rights Campaign, a significant percentage of LGBTQ+ employees report discrimination or harassment in the workplace.
Creating a clear and comprehensive nondiscrimination policy is not only ethically correct but also beneficial for the company's reputation and internal culture. When employees feel protected and valued, they are more productive and committed to their work. A diverse and inclusive environment has been proven to foster creativity, innovation, and engagement — qualities any successful company should aspire to.
By pushing Hobby Lobby to adopt such policies, we can set a precedent for other companies in the arts and crafts retail industry to follow. The impact of one major employer's change can ripple through the sector, raising standards and fostering more inclusive industry norms.
We urge Hobby Lobby to listen to their LGBTQ+ employees and customers and lead by example. A comprehensive LGBTQ+ nondiscrimination policy would include commitments to prevent discrimination in hiring, promotions, and all workplace interactions, as well as support systems for LGBTQ+ employees who experience or report harassment.
