Petition updateUrge Gretna Public Schools to protect student press freedomWhat the district called “controversial,” the NSAA called the best in its class.

Two updates I want to share with you all.

First: Aidan McClaren, the Gretna East student whose editorial cartoon was censored by district administrators in February, won Class B Journalism at the NSAA State Journalism Competition yesterday. The same cartoon the district pulled down for being too "controversial" was just recognized at the highest level of student journalism in this state.

Second: Aidan's editorial, the piece our administration wouldn’t allow GEM to publish, is now live, in full, on my personal site:

We are still pushing for the three demands of this petition: a formal student media policy, reinstatement of the cartoon, and an end to administrative prior review. Thank you for standing with us.
