The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) has sent a formal letter to the Gretna Public Schools Board of Education calling the censorship of the editorial cartoon unconstitutional.

You can read the full letter here: https://www.fire.org/research-learn/fire-letter-gretna-public-schools-april-7-2026

FIRE is one of the largest free speech organizations in the country. They have opened a public case page tracking the district's response and have demanded a substantive reply by April 15.

This is now the third national organization to weigh in. The Student Press Law Center submitted a letter of support when the appeal was filed. The Cathy Kuhlmeier Foundation, named after the student at the center of the Supreme Court case the district is relying on to justify the censorship, is also sending letters to the board. And now FIRE has put the district on notice with a formal legal letter and a public deadline.

The petition has passed 500 signatures. The board meeting is April 13 at 7 PM. If you can attend, your presence matters. You don't have to speak. Just being in the room shows the board that the community is watching.

Thank you for your continued support.
