Last month, our community was shattered by an unspeakable tragedy. The shooting at Annunciation Catholic Church and School took the lives of two beautiful angels: Harper Moyski, just 10, and Fletcher Merkel, only 8. Our hearts ache for their families, and our community is left grappling with the loss of young, innocent lives. In the aftermath of this senseless act of violence, we cannot afford to stand idly by.

To prevent future tragedies, we must take decisive action to ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines in Minnesota. Assault weapons are designed for maximum lethality and have no place in our neighborhoods, schools, and places of worship. Statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that states with stricter gun control laws have fewer gun-related deaths. By enacting similar measures, we can protect our community from further heartbreak.

We urge Governor Walz to call a special session of the Minnesota State Legislature to address this urgent matter. Our lawmakers have the power to make our schools and communities safer by enacting bans on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, along with stronger regulations for gun ownership. Such measures will undoubtedly decrease the odds of another tragic event happening on Minnesota soil.

Every day we delay is a risk we cannot afford. Harper and Fletcher deserved so much more, and their memory fuels our determination for change. Together, we can demand a future where our children are safe and free from the dangers of gun violence.
