As residents of Carolina MacGillavrylaan, we pay a high price to live in student housing and that includes the right to live in a secure apartment building let alone neighbourhood. However, in the past few weeks, our sense of security and peace has been significantly compromised. Numerous incidents involving unauthorized entries by homeless individuals have led to an environment of fear and anxiety within our home. We understand the plight of the homeless community, and our call is not against them but rather urging DUWO Amsterdam to uphold its responsibility toward ensuring our safety and security through proper facility management.

Our Issue!

Carolina MacGillavrylaan, a student building managed by DUWO, has been facing alarming security issues due to malfunctioning building locks, doors and insufficient security measures. The faulty locks have become an open invitation to trespassers and unauthorized individuals, which has increased the risk for all residents. The lack of secure entrances and exits is a direct threat to our personal safety and peace of mind. Yet, instead of fixing these facilities, they have placed the blame on the residents for allowing the unauthorised trespassers to enter and told us to call the police (We have done so more than 10 times).

Proposed Solutions:

1. Repair and Upgrade Locks: We urge DUWO to carry out immediate repairs on all building locks to ensure they are fully functional. Attention should be given to upgrading locking systems to more secure, modern versions to prevent future breakdowns.

2. Enhanced Security Patrols: Increase periodic security patrols around the premises, especially during late hours. This additional presence can deter potential trespassers and ensure the safety of all residents. In the case, to hire a security guard to make sure the place is safe during the long nights.

Resolving these security issues will not only restore the security that should be a given right for us, but also bring peace of mind to every resident on Carolina MacGillavrylaan. As even more states, it is a student housing and many students are international students who for the first time in their lives, moved out of their homes and family nest.
