The Issue

Imagine living in a place you call home, yet having no legal recognition of your existence. This is the reality of stateless people in the United States, including those represented by United Stateless, a community-driven organization dedicated to advocating for people like us. We are individuals without a nationality, often left invisible by the systems meant to protect us. Despite contributing to the social, cultural, and economic fabric of this nation, stateless individuals live with insecurity, unable to access essential services like identity, healthcare, employment, and education.

Statelessness is not just a personal hardship—it’s a human rights issue. Without legal recognition, stateless individuals are deprived of their basic rights, leading to a cycle of discrimination and marginalization. According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), there are an estimated 218,000 stateless individuals residing in the United States. Yet, the U.S. lacks comprehensive policies or legal frameworks to address their plight effectively.

We are calling on Congress to take decisive steps to recognize and protect stateless individuals within our borders. This includes establishing legal statuses that grant access to nationality, creating pathways for citizenship, and ensuring access to fundamental rights and services. Other countries have implemented frameworks for stateless individuals, demonstrating its achievability and the positive impact it can have on individuals and society at large.

Securing recognition and basic rights for stateless individuals is not only a matter of justice but a testament to the values of freedom and equality that the United States upholds. Urge your representatives in Congress to support initiatives that provide legal recognition and protection for stateless people. Stand with us to ensure that everyone, regardless of nationality, can live a life of dignity and purpose.

Sign this petition to make a difference and encourage U.S. lawmakers to champion the rights of stateless individuals, offering them hope and the promise of a brighter, more secure future in America.
